Another Round in an Old Struggle
Apparently in 1944, what especially bothered Long and his cohorts was a major civil rights case from Texas, then before the US Supreme Court. On April 3, the Court in the case of "Smith vs. Allwright" ruled that the Texans' "lily-white" Democratic primary election was illegal because it violated the 14th Amendment of the Federal Constitution. This judicial precedent obviously would apply across the American South. Predictably, the decision was greeted with angry public hysteria throughout the southern states, including SC.

Make no mistake about the intentions of the Confederate defectors. On March 11, the seven original secessionist states ratified a permanent constitution, which--while it closely resembled the Federal Constitution--made no declaration that all men are created equal, and instead allowed interstate commerce in slaves.

Sen. Ford's Flag Stance Raises Questions
Ford said as a Christian, he wanted to help bring racial healing. He said the dual holiday bill could have white children learning about the Civil Rights era and black children understanding the Confederacy. That's what King would want him to do, he said.
